Scunci Hand Held Steamer Review

Going chemical free in your home is so extremely important and is gaining popularity after a long line of bleach and ammonia based products have been best sellers on the shelves.  Killing viruses and bacteria, however, are just as important.  We can’t sacrifice germs for natural and chemical free… Can we?

NO!  We can not!  There are solutions out there.  My absolute favorite for deep cleaning is handheld steam cleaners.  It uses only steam (yes, only WATER) to clean, disinfect, and leave your surfaces looking sparkly clean.  Seriously!  Check this out:

Scunci SS1000 Steamer is THE one I have used since before my oldest was born (she is 13 now).  My (then) husband got it for me after seeing it on TV and I still say it is the best gift I have ever recieved.  I can get in between the smallest spaces and I know that they are cleaner and more effectively cleaned than I would ever be able to get with a spray or any other way I can attempt.  {Amazon and Scunci do not pay me to write however, there are affiliate links in this post}

The scunci steamer comes with multiple attachments.  I have used them all, they all serve their purpose very well.  My favorite is the long hose with the general purpose attachment head.  I clean the little crevices of the toilet (it deodorizes as well), I clean the tile and grout, I clean EVERYTHING with it.  My mom used to make fun of me until I let her use mine.  She was moving out of her house and needed something to clean the grout of the floor tiles.  I told her it wasn’t a good idea to use the steamer because she wanted a quick clean.  I told her this would work too well and she would have a project which would take a couple days to clean her very large floor.  Well… long story short, she didn’t believe me and ended up with a project.  The steamer took her grout from “deep grey” to WHITE which meant she couldn’t stop mid-way.  She had to complete the task.

I am not sure how odd this is, but I clean my mattress with it too.  I use the wide head for this one and take my time.  I want to kill every little germ that could be lurking in my bed!  My 11 year old has severe allergies to some common things that we have a hard time controlling.  One of those is dust mites.  I don’t know if you have ever looked up dust mites but they are NASTY creatures!  (I am going to stop there, I’m not getting gross) The Scunci SS1000 steamer kills dust mites!!  I am floored at this fact!  When my son was little I would use this steamer weekly because it was fast and efficient and I knew my baby would sleep better in his room with no dust – we all do right?  I cleaned from the top down in his whole room including the window, window track, blinds, shelves, his mattress and bed frame.  I even blasted the books and toys instead of dusting and leaving it to fall to the floor.

Now that you have heard my glowing overall opinion

The Pros

  • I have already mentioned that it disinfects, deodorizes, sanitizes.

And that it

    • Kills bacteria, allergens and dust mites.
    • TheScunci SS1000 HandHeld Steamer is also light-weight, not quite 7 lbs – thats less than a gallon of milk!  I personally like to use the long hose attachment wherever I take it so I don’t have to carry it around at all.
    • The cord is really long.  I really don’t have an issue with having to unplug and re-plug it in as I clean a room.
    • When they say “hand held” it really is.  It is a bit larger than a standard coffee pot.  Extremely portable.
    • Despite it’s small size it is POWERFUL!  I have used other steamers before that are pretty good
    • Steam out wrinkles in clothes

The Bissell is a pretty good little steamer.  My mom wanted to try it because it was cheaper than the Scunci.  Why not try it out?  The Scunci isn’t exactly cheap and if Bissell could make a comparable product she might as well save some money right?  If I had never used the Scunci I probably would be satisfied for the money spent with the Bissell.  BUT You know how much I love my SS1000.  She ended up sending the little guy back and spending the money for the Scunci.

You will get to know this about me:  I don’t spend money often.  When I can pinch a penny, I will!  BUT if I want something to last and do the job right I will get the best for my money.  Like a quality contractor, how does that saying go?  You have to have the right tool for the job to get it done right the first time… something like that hehe.  They spend money on their tools because it will last them years and years.  I believe the same thing.  I would rather spend more now than have to replace it next year OR get an inferior product so I have to work harder.  Nope nope, No Thank you!

Thanks for hanging on for the detour.  Back to the Features

      • The water tank holds 50% more than the other comparable hand held steamers.  I am able to clean my entire bathroom easily top to bottom with one tank.  If you have a small bathroom you could probably move on to the next room and clean a good chunk of it too before having to refill.  I could clean my son’s room as detailed as I was with 2 tank fulls.
      • It works GREAT on upholstery (killing those dust mites just like my mattress!)
      • Includes a one year limited warranty
      • It comes with a measuring cup and a funnel so you never need to worry about getting water everywhere or how much is too much water.Scunci Steamer Review - Amazon star reviews

The Cons

There are none hehe!  Just kiddingScunci Steamer Review - steam pressure

      • It gets hot – ITS STEAM!  So you really need to teach the kids NOT to touch and you should honestly be careful too.  The hose can get a bit hot and the tip is always hot.  Before you take off the lid to refill be sure to read the instruction manual on how to do it.  I  have never had a bad burn but it has certainly made me jump unscrewing the lid too soon or when I forgot to release the preasure.
      • It can melt things.  – ITS STEAM!
      • If you have hard water take care of what is inside.  I have lived in Nevada, Colorado, Kansas, and California with my steamer and every once in a while I will put some filtered or distilled water through it just to clean out any build up collected in there.
      • It isn’t a quick process like it would be for an every day cleaner.  It takes time for the water to heat and the pressure to build.  I have never timed it but I generally come back around 10-15 minutes and it’s ready to go.  It also takes time to cool down.
      • You have to hold the trigger down.  It really isn’t a difficult trigger, my thumb tires after 2-3 tank fulls.  It is a safety feature that when you let go, it stops steaming so you do have to hold it the whole time.
      • It is more expensive. When you consider how much you spend on chemicals, you will save money – A LOT OF MONEY – But the upfront cost is something you have to talk yourself into.

All in all a GREAT BUY

A lot of the one-star reviews I addressed in the “Cons” section.  IT GETS HOT!

  1. Hi,

I bought one of these about 2 years ago and have been so pleased, I got one for me sister. Great for small cleaning jobs in tight spaces; refrigerators, bathroom crevices and tough to reach areas! And there are no chemicals involved.

That said, be careful not to use the wire brushes on tile. It will leave scratches.

    1. Thanks for the word of advice! I had forgotten I learned this lesson one time… that’s all it takes ONE TIME! So happy you love it as much as I do!

  2. Steamers appear to be all the rage nowadays but I have never owned one. The parents do and we have borrowed a few in the past.

Great products but like you say have to be careful when you have kids around.

Always advertising them here in the UK but they are much cheaper than the one you have reviewed.

I’m sure you get what you pay for with this product.

Great review and thank you for sharing.

    1. Yes, most of them are cheap here ($40-100) but you are replacing a low quality product pretty often and I have had mine for over 13 years. Thank you for the feedback!

  3. A really nifty gadget! Aside from being able to kill bacteria, allergens and dust mites, I think what has me sold on this steamer is the really long cord – which believe it or not is not a standard feature with many gadgets!. I also think this would be great for deep cleaning the car. Certainly a great investment.

    1. RIGHT?!?! That’s why I included that little tid bit into my brag. Wisdom comes with life experience 🙂 I have to have a long cord or cordless with all my machines.

  4. Very interesting article and have actually made a note of it, keep up the good work and im sure things will work out good 🙂
The size and structure to this article I do love.
    Jason 🙂

  5. Hi there,

Love your review!! Why is it us moms get excited over household cleaning products lol. This sounds like an amazing product and I would definitely try it. You mentioned it deorderizes as well, I’m just curious if it’s just water how scent can be produced? Would love to hear more about that!!

Great review, Mother’s Day is coming up 🤔………

    1. Why DO we get so excited?? Probably because it makes our lives so much easier lol! Scent isn’t produced. If you want a scent I guess you would have to go back through with a scent after you are done cleaning. I like to use a diffuser in my home so it is natural essential oils from Melaleuca (a review will be coming soon on that company). I will give you an invitation to join this exclusive company if you would like. Quality and natural.

YES! Mothers Day IS coming! I once gave my mom a nice vacuum for mothers day and I told her that it was her mothers day and birthday present for a few years – each year I go to her closet and pull out the vacuum, hand it to her and say Happy Mothers Day! She still loves it!

  6. Hey,

A very informative and comprehensive review. We do actually need a new steamer and you seem very convincing with your review. Especially when you say you don’t brag.

If I end up following you and buying a steamer then I will let you know and I will give you my thoughts on it.

Thanks for sharing a great review and keep up the amazing work on your site.

    All the best,

  7. Wow ! what an incredible machine I had no idea you could clean things properly and kill germs without spending money on chemicals. I am guessing that the Scunci cleaner leaves no awful smells like chemicals do ? anyway you have sold me and I wont be wasting money on chemicals anymore, who knows whats in them ? Would the Scunci cleaner be good for cleaning my car ?

    1. Yes, It would be great at cleaning the car. Getting in all those little crevices the car has! You would probably have to use an extension cord depending on your garage set up. This machine doesn’t come with a battery. When you use it on the upholstery, make sure you give it enough time to dry completely. It doesn’t soak anything but it is water so just give it a little extra time. No smell is left at all! It can get humid tho if you are cleaning a smaller room.
